What to expect
Learning in an automatic car.
Licence
Automatic only
An automatic pass gives you an automatic licence. To drive a manual later you would need to take the manual test as well.
Difficulty
Less to coordinate
No clutch and no gear changes means more attention left for observation, junctions and road position. Many learners find it faster.
Availability
The smaller pool
There are fewer automatic instructors than manual ones in most areas, so a match can take longer to find. Worth knowing upfront.
Cost
Set by the instructor
We don't set prices or take a cut of lessons. Automatic hourly rates are sometimes higher, but fewer hours can offset that.
Electric
Every EV is automatic
Electric cars have no gearbox to change, so they are automatics by definition. An automatic licence covers the whole EV market.
Abroad
Book earlier, pay more
Automatics are standard in the US but a smaller part of European hire fleets, where they tend to cost more and run out sooner in peak season.
Honestly
Fewer instructors. Plan for that.
The genuine friction with automatic is supply, not difficulty. In some postcodes automatic instructors are booked well ahead, so give yourself more notice than you think you need.
The upside is real too: with no clutch or gears to manage, a lot of learners reach test standard in fewer hours, which can bring the total cost closer than the hourly rate suggests.
Automatic is also the practical answer for many people with a condition, an injury or a licence restriction that makes a manual car hard work. You do not have to explain any of that to us.

The other option
Thinking about manual instead?
A manual pass gives you a licence covering both manual and automatic cars, at the cost of more to learn and usually more hours. Worth reading before you commit either way.
