What to expect

Learning in a manual car.

Licence

It covers both

Pass in a manual and your licence covers manual and automatic cars. Pass in an automatic and it covers automatic only.

Difficulty

More to coordinate

Clutch, gears and hill starts are extra things to learn on top of steering, observation and road position. Most people get there.

Availability

The larger pool

Most UK instructors teach manual, so in most areas manual is the easier of the two to find and often the quicker to start.

Cost

Set by the instructor

We don't set prices or take a cut of lessons. Rates vary by area and by whether you book singles or a block. Ask before booking.

Abroad

Hire cars in Europe

Hire fleets across most of Europe are still largely manual. An automatic-only licence narrows what you can book and automatics usually cost more when they are available.

Buying

A wider used market

At the cheap end of the used market, manual cars are still the bigger share, so a manual licence gives you more to choose from on a first-car budget.

Honestly

Manual takes longer. That is the trade.

Manual generally needs more lesson hours than automatic, because there is simply more to learn. If your main goal is to be on the road quickly, automatic is worth considering.

If you want one licence that covers every car you might ever borrow, drive for work or hire abroad, manual is the one that does it. That flexibility is the whole argument for it.

If you genuinely don't know, pick "Not sure" when we ask. Instructors are used to that question and it costs you nothing to leave it open.

The other option

Thinking about automatic instead?

Fewer controls to manage, usually fewer hours to test standard, and a licence limited to automatic cars. Worth reading before you commit either way.
