◆ Cost calculator
What will learning to drive actually cost you?
The test fees are fixed and published. The lessons are not, and they are most of the bill. Put in your postcode and how you want to learn, and see the real number.
Optional. With it we can show the test centres near you.
We do not set lesson prices and take no cut of them, so we cannot quote you one. As a UK guide, RAC and AA commentary puts typical rates at £35 to £45 an hour in 2026. Block bookings often save 5 to 15 percent.
Optional. We will check it against real waiting times where you are.

Where the numbers come from
Nothing here is invented.
Provisional licence
£34 online
£43 on the paper D1 form. You can apply from 15 years and 9 months old, though you cannot drive a car until you turn 17.
Theory test
£23
Covers both parts in one sitting: 50 multiple choice questions and the hazard perception clips. Same price in Northern Ireland.
Practical test
£62 weekday
£75 in the evening, at the weekend or on a bank holiday. Refundable in full if you cancel at least three clear working days ahead.
Hours needed
45 hours average
From DVSA's Ready to Pass research, plus about 22 hours of private practice. Learners who do both are substantially more likely to pass first time.
Waiting times
Real, per centre
Median waits published monthly by the DVSA for every test centre in Great Britain, to July 2026.
Lesson prices
Not ours to set
Instructors price their own lessons and there is no published national dataset of them, so we show a UK guide range and let you enter what you were quoted.
Fees checked against GOV.UK in August 2026. Pass rates and waiting times contain public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0, source Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.
